GSA ANNUAL CONFERENCE SEATTLE October 21-25, 2017
5 UC Clermont College Geology Undergraduate Research Students traveled to Seattle, Washington to present and publish their research work for the international conference of approximately 8000 geologists. A broad spectrum of geological specialties from planetary geology to paleontology, geophysics, and geochemistry were represented by geologists from all over the world. The students presented their own work, studied the work of others, and took the opportunity to discuss their common interests and questions with other geologists. This networking resulted in valuable contacts for jobs, graduate schools, helpful advice, learning about a variety of careers, potential cooperative working relationships, and grounding in the professional geology community. The group also explored the unique field geology of the region, including its deadly risks of large earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, lahars, landslides, and tsunamis.
sunday, October 22This was the second publication and research presentation for these students. Their first was at the Ohio Academy of Science Annual Conference, April 9, 2017. A summer and autumn of field work in Wyoming, lab data analyses, and presentation preparation occupied their time between two presentations in one year (freshman /sophomore). In addition, the students participated in a third group presentation before the UC President Pinto, Provost, and Board of Trustees in July. These presentations have given the students a wide range of experience and skills that would not have been otherwise available to them. These include, but are not limited to, use of the scientific method in project concept design and work plan, field geology work and observation, proper collection, preparation and analyses of samples and data, preparation of presentations, engagement with other scientists and networking in geological circles.

Monday, October 23These bright, enthusiastic, hard-working, creative, curious, and capable geology undergraduates have taken the opportunity to grow in their field and establish themselves as likely candidates for fellowship-scholarship support, graduate education, and higher level employment. UC Clermont geology students design and work on their own projects beginning in their first semester. Students are welcome to enter this program for adventure, discovery, and an accelerated start as freshmen.
Wednesday, October 25This Geology Undergraduate Research program has been very successful for UC Clermont College. We are extremely proud of the excellent accomplishments our distinguished students have achieved. We are also proud of the way they have represented the quality of educational opportunities and personal encouragement toward goals available to all at UC Clermont College.
The commitment of Clermont College to undergraduate research is recognized as a substantial undertaking. Our contribution of two presentations/publications at annual conferences by 5 students in one discipline is also recognized as substantial. The administration, faculty and staff of Clermont College all share in facilitating the success that our students dream of for themselves. Each student’s success is our mission. (Student presentations, trip account, pictures, and regional geology summaries are included in subsequent sections.) |
